It has been about 2 months now since I got my First Minelab X-terra 705. I actually have 2 now as I saw a deal I couldn’t resist and I have the Huge 15′ Coiltek coils in 18.75khz and 7.5khz. They are my new beach and park go to weapons.
But that’s just being a bragging smart ass, i’ll save that for another post about the coils.
I have noticed a disturbing side affect to my metal detecting addiction. It’s really weird and i have to laugh about it really.
It seems I am becoming a bit of a hoarder of coins, crap jewelry and general other assorted junk.
A few days ago I needed a loaf of bread to make the kids lunch for school. It was just before the holidays started. A loaf of bread costs me $3.80 at the bakery just for the record.
Looked in My phone case/wallet and no luck it was empty, checked the junk bowl on the table and managed to scrape up about $1.30. Right $2.50 to go…… Checked the car console for another $1 but despite 10 minutes of looking couldn’t find anymore shrapnel to buy the bread.
My son helpfully pointed out that I have a jar FULL of coins, “why don’t you just use that’ he says.
I actually felt weird, I looked at the jar and could not bring myself to get out the $1.50 I needed to get the bread.
“NO WAY” I say to my son, “that’s my finds jar I’m not spending that!”
“WHY?” he asks.
To which I replied, “go and brush your teeth and sort out your hair.”
As I stood at the ATM machine withdrawing a redback to get the bread and started to think about the jar. What where my plans for the ever growing pile of spendable coins I am finding?
Now there is not a fortune there, about $170 from mental calculation and guesswork. BUT $170 is a fair bit of coin in the scheme of things.
I could pay 3 months mobile phone bills, 1 months electricity, 1 weeks groceries (OK 4 days, I have a teenager) or even take my wife out for dinner.
But NO……. I can’t do it. I can’t spend my spendables!
They just go in the jar each time I get a few, after an inspection and basic clean to check for notable dates or any weird markings etc etc. You know what I mean, that hope that the 50 cent piece you found is some ultra rare coin worth millions, I always look at my finds individually.
The jar keeps getting more in it and I get more and more vague with the excuses for not spending it. My wife has threatened to bank it of all things, I threatened to buy loads of beer and invite the boys around for a poker night.
Now this is not taking into account the following jars:
- Foreign Coins
- 1 cent and 2 cent Bits.
- Pre-decimal coins (post 1945)
- Pre-Decimal coins (pre-1945)
- The Bullet Jar.
- The Cheap Jewelry jar.
- The Key jar
- The sinker and lead bucket.
- The “that’s weird” jar.
- and lastly, at the moment, the needs electrolysis jar.
- Oh yeah and the jar I actually do electrolysis in.
Each Jar gets an addition on a regular basis and as my collection, Note the word collection, grows I plan to divide it into years. For some reason I have the desire to get data on the most dropped coins. ?????
My wife now calls me a hoarder and has suggested a TV show I should watch.
But at least my finds are the only thing I am hoarding, so far.
The collection grows, i sit there and stare at it at times and get a real sense of satisfaction that if necessary i could Inject nearly $200,thought lost forever, into the Australian economy at anytime. If I keep hoarding… I mean collecting than the next GFC is on me.
Need a stimulous package then get the detectorists to spend their spendable’s.
P.S. Are you are hoarder or a spender of your spendable finds? I am really hoping there are people like me that just can’t spend them. LOL
