Last Night my mate convinced me to go for a hunt about 10pm. We Intended to hit the beach for the low tide but due to wind and general softness, To be honest the idea of wet feet did not appeal at all, we decided to try a new park instead.
Its an old area in my town and the hopes where pretty high for some good finds.
It started well with a $1 coin and a 5 cent piece quite quickly then we had a bit of a dry patch and must have dug about a dozen bits of junk in a row.
We had noticed a group of about 6 teenagers walking along the road near the park and making a little noise. I kept my eye on them and 4 of them settled at one of the park benches.
The other 2 disappeared somewhere and thats when the calling out began. SARAH……..SARAH……. time after time. No response to the calling but they kept it up for like 15 minutes. SARAH……..SARAH…
So I am on my knees retrieving a target and my buddy had moved on to locate the next one when I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye.
I looked up to see a figure crash into my friend, who was holding my 705, and nearly knocked him over. Lucky he’s a big lad and the skinny teen that run in to him was probably half his weight.
Looking toward the shelter where I last saw the teens, I noticed the other 4 where not moving toward us, so I quickly gained my feet and crossed the 15 or so meters to my friend very quickly.
At the the time I was wearing my Black beanie, some gloves and had my diamond digger tool in my hand. As I approached the lad and screamed “WTF mate” I must have looked a little like a nutter.
He quickly backed down and told us that he thought we where his missing friends.
After the initial shock wore off I said to the dude, ‘mate you came so close to getting a beating you can’t quite appreciate it.”
I told him to go away and my mate and I stood there for a few minutes pretty worked up. Initially It looked like we were going to get attacked and the initial fright was quite a big one.
I am 42 and my mate is in his 50’s. We are not little guys and I’m pretty sure that if we where in fact attacked we would hold our own for a little while at least.
What got me was that I never saw him coming and neither did Bobby.
To me its a valuable lesson in always being aware of what and who is around you. its a real wake up call for night hunting and that some dick can come out of nowhere and really ruin your night.
10 Minutes after the incident one of the other guys come over and apologised on behalf of his alcohol fueled friend and was very embarrassed about what had happened. The other lads come over as well and we explained that jumping on people in the night when you don’t know who they are can be a bad thing.
We had a laugh about old mate that was strangely hiding and again they apologised for the stupid act.
Not long after we called the hunt, the incident although innocent in the end really gave us a rattling and we decided a beer was a better option.
As much as I enjoy the night Hunt I will be doubly aware of who and what is around me from now on as next time it might not be a pissed teen.
have fun all and enjoy your night hunting, just take proper precautions and always go with a buddy.
