Metal detecting

Night Hunt, metal detecting a modern feature and finding older coins……weird.

  • metal detecting finds

G’day Folks,

Last night after watching the broncos wallop the chooks in the football I decided to hit a favorite spot close to home. Its only 2 minutes away and is my go to place if i’m not feeling like a drive.

It’s an old park area right near the beach front but it has some modern additions like a big all abilities playground and skate park. These structures are less than 10 years old and when they went in a lot of dirt was moved around in the area.

I always find something there and because of the teenagers at the skate park and the mums, dads and kids at the playground the finds are varied and usually interesting.

Parts of the park are what I call “Mega trash” areas and using anything but the 6 inch coil on the 705 is pretty much hopeless. I did use the 7.5khz 15inch coil But it would be reading 2 and sometimes 3 or 4 signals across the coil. the poor machine couldn’t work out which one i wanted so would just go a bit berko.

Once I had the 6 inch, life improved a lot in these areas and although I have a high trash to treasure ratio the finds are, as i mentioned, normally cool enough to keep me going.

What I am finding really weird in this area is that I am finding coins as far back as 1966 in area’s that where heavily excavated not so long ago.

Over a DOZEN 1 cent pieces and about half that in 2 cent pieces all in places I would never had thought I would find them? It’s really confusing. It is truly like someone dumped some coin rich top soil down at some stage.

The finds are not super deep, the older ones are around the 5-7 inch mark. So they have been there a while but the area has been built up like 2.5 meters to accommodate the height of the skate bowl.

Now this location is no honey hole as the goldies are few and far between. Last night I ht Just 1x$2 and 1x$1 coins.BUT I got 8 x 10 cent  4 x 5 cent a 20 and 50 cent as well as a single 1 cent piece from 1969 Right next to a shade structure support that’s been there 10 years MAX.

I’m not sure where the older coins in the newer area came from but I am enjoying finding them.

There are Pre-dec coins there somewhere, as I have a three pence from 1958 to prove that. They are just either very deep or masked by the mass of trash that is around.

Here is a pick of the finds from last night. I dumped most of the trash, what is left is from the last session after a quick drink break at the car.

The finds from 2 and a bit hours close to home.
Wide date range from a pretty modern development is kinda weird.

The $1 coin is roasted, Just like its been in the wet sand for a longtime? Normally the coind are in good condition from here if a little stained.

I think that is what I like about metal detecting areas, your never really sure what your going to find and the anticipation that the next one might just be the one keeps me going for hours at a time.

Still there is one thing I like to find from a mystery point of view but i’ll talk about that in another post.

Happy hunting folks, I am off to a new area tonite to see what I can uncover.

Take care and Look after the area you hunt so you can hunt there for a long time to come.
