I live about 20 minutes drive from a small gold town that in the late 1800’s was the scene of a short lived gold rush. The gold played out very quickly and the town shrunk nearly as fast as it grew.
As a result of the gold claims and the rapid shrinking of the town there are many state owned blocks of land in the area. This is fantastic news for us detectorists as access is very easy and there are some great finds to be had there still.
In the video below I went to one of these areas that used to the site of quite a few residential houses and you can still see some of the remnants of these as you walk through the area. Though a lot of homes where built on poles in the area so there are no foundations as such. Just Flattened areas on the hillside and relics in Bunches that give a few hints of what was once there.
The ground is quite mineralised and changes in colour from black to red and back again as you make you way higher up the first hill. I had to change to the tracking ground balance on the Deus as each time the soil changed so did the detector. Tracking ground balance made a huge difference and it doesn’t track out the targets on you.
The program I was using was the GM POWER Program. This is the program I use for areas that are NOT Littered with modern trash like can slaw and ring pulls. The program allows you to get really good depth yet still be able to pick out the good targets from around the less desirable ones.
I did change to 5 tones as well as I like a good spread of audio and like to divide the higher conductivity targets into 3 groups. So I have three tones that cover 65-70, 71-85, 86-99. This way I can target the ranges I like to look for and as many desirable coins are in the top 86+ bracket I like to hear them separately. The other 2 tones cover Iron and the whole mid tone range. In this situation I still dig all the mid tones as that is where the gold signals are, you just never know.
This was also my first hunt where I used the XY Axis feature on the deus and it really helped with those iron targets that roll over into the very high tone bracket. They show 01-03 on the screen then rapidly change to 97-99 and tone high. Sometimes I get caught thinking there is a little something between those iron targets but using the XY axis it was correct on all the test digs I made.
More on this feature in a future article and video.
The Video I made of the dig with the 9 inch Deus is below. It is my First “In the Field” Video and I am learning so they can only get better. I am surprised at how well the in the field footage came out and finally solved my problem with poor sound quality.
If you have any questions regarding the Deus GM power program or the XP Deus in general get in touch by leaving a comment on the blog or on the YouTube channel.
You can also catch up on Facebook and see the photo’s from some of the digs that I do locally with the Deus.
