XP Deus version 4 Final BETA was made available to dealers recently, as I live in Australia my Coils and Pointer are still a few days away so here are my thoughts on the XP deus version 4 Just before I go for my first hunt with the standard coil.
Let me start by saying that in about 15 months as the Australian Deus distributor I had actually never done a firmware upgrade or reset on any Deus unit. So the entire process from start to finish was a first for me.
I videoed the process just to show that even as a first time updater, its really, really easy to upgrade the deus or re-Install the firmware. I admit even I was surprised just how simple it was.

My very first Impression after Installing XP Deus version 4 was that the remote responds faster to button pushes. Sounds ridiculous I know, But for example when you push the menu button the menu appears instantly. Most deus owners know that sometimes V3 was a bit slow to respond and we have all scrolled past the setting we wanted as the deus couldn’t keep up with our “Text message trained” fingers.
NOW It can.
Now I have only had a very quick look through these and most of the familiar programs are still there. What you’ll notice straight away is that Program 6 is Now Called DEEP and program 9 is Called HOT.
What got me the most here was that these 2 programs have the XY screen as standard. I have used the XY screen before and found it be a handy tool in modern coin hunts. It gives up a bottle cap almost everytime, so program 9 will be just awesome for those high speed shallow coin hunts or carving coins out of trash infested sites.
HOT will be the first program I run in the field today and I’ll report back how it goes.
The DEEP Program is the first factory program I have seen that has TX set on 3. Its a Low and slow program by the look and I think the UK pasture crew will do well with this one.
Our hunting is very different here in Australia and our best finds are made quite often in old public areas and home sites. Each of these is layered with trash from iron and lead nails, to modern pull tabs and can slaw. I think DEEP will be better suited to the older style hunts for us aussies where the modern trash isn’t so bad. Think old racecourses and cricket fields for program 6.
Noticeable Changes before I go Hunting:
There a few changes that Experienced Deus owners will see straight away like the new 2.5 reactivity level to cut down the gap between 2 and 3. Yes we Know it was too big and 2.5 seems like a good starting speed for me?
NEGATIVE Discrimination Numbers: The XP Deus version 4 has the ability now to discriminate even lower with the addition of negative discrimination. Go right down to -6.4. WHY? I here you ask.
This is a hoard Hunter or deep relic chasers feature, it allows you to hear EVEN more than you already could with the deus wide open. It is designed for those looking for ferrous objects that may lead to better finds. Pots of coins where the pot itself may hide the non ferrous signals for example.
It will also be a great feature for ancient ceramic hunters and meteorite searchers. 2 things that are either illegal or impossible to do in Australia. You can work out which is which. LOL
What you can’t see:
It seems XP have done a lot of work on the processing side of things and improvements in both processing speed and signal recognition seem to be apparent.
I noticed in a quick swing in my yard that iron signals seemed to be very clear and I didn’t get near as many high pitched bleeps that turn into low pitched grunts after you go over them again. To my FULL TONE Ears it seemed like it had better target recognition? I’ll test this more in my favorite junk filled park and see for sure.
What I haven’t tried yet:
Today will be the maiden first Hunt with the XP Deus V4, I’ll hit a few places so I get an idea of how it functions in a few different scenarios.
- Trashy Park
- Old RaceCourse, Not much modern trash but a bit of iron where the good stuff is.
- Sandy Soil at an old Caravan Park where coins spread from the 30’s to the 2000’s and hideous amount of trash from about 8 decades. Its a challenge this spot.
Haven’t used or even seen the coil and pin pointer which for me is a good thing. I get to use the V4 software for about a week without the new toys so I’ll get a good chance to see how it improves my day to day hunting.
I think this is the most important of all the testing as Version 4 for most people will be about how there Deus experience is enhanced by version 4 software, not the coils and pointer.
This Update has been a long time coming and I think the focus on the coil and pointer is maybe a bit too narrow. We really need to look at all the other changes that you can’t see to software programs and how the Deus functions.
One example of how much the XOP Deus has improved may be seen as a negative to some.
The battery Life of the remote has dropped a bit to about 20 hours.
Now don’t freak out there is a reason for this.
XP Deus uses more power because it generally does things even faster than before. YES it was a very fast little machine, now it is on FULL BOOST all the time and processes information quicker and with more accuracy than ever before.
I think this is where experienced Deus users will notice a difference. For those that are New deus it will seem weird I am saying this. I have over 1000 hours on the Deus at a guess, probably a lot more and this was apparent to me as soon as I turned the V4 machine on. You’ll see what I mean.
All in All It looks like the Deus V4 update although not as dramatic as the version 3 upgrade will certainly bring a lot to the table for those that choose to take up the optional coils or not.
The pin pointer is a tool you need in the field and with it’s features will become a market leader in time I believe. The ability to integrate with the deus wirelessly is just insane and NO other product or manufacturer can come close to this type of thing.
Its a personal choice whether you need the MI6 NOW or when your current pointer dies, as it inevitably will at some stage.
There is plenty to offer those that don’t really need the HF coil and I think V4 will be great for the majority of detectorists.
I suspect some will not be happy and I can almost bet that there will plenty of V3 and even V2 Deus running around for a while yet. Personally I think your mad, But I understand how being comfortable with what you have is nice.
Remember you can always go back to Version 3.2 if you need to, But seriously I don’t think you will.
Happy Hunting, I’ll report in after some field testing today and tomorrow as that is where it counts.
Version 4 Deus Will be available soon to all Deus Owners.
