The Metal Detecting secret that will almost force you to find more, have more fun and get way more enjoyment out of the hobby.
My Job is Metal Detecting, Sounds like a dream come true doesn’t it? Well it is and isn’t depends what day you ask me. LOL
The reason I point this out is I spend my day immersed in the hobby of metal detecting, about 10% of that time is actually detecting the rest is working on my business, forum and a couple of side projects that will come to life later this year.
Loads of people ring, email and PM me and ask for tips, tricks, settings, upgraded equipment, locations and more. They are looking to find more stuff basically and want the magic secret.
There is a common thread amongst a lot of the people I speak to and it’s the main reason they are not finding that much or struggling to get to know their equipment or dig location.
If you can remove this block from your brain you will find more stuff more often almost guaranteed!
It’s that serious! And being so immersed in detecting I find myself on the end of this more often than I would like to admit in the field. I can now spot when its happening and make some changes so it doesn’t do me over too bad or in a bad case I’ll just pull up stumps for the day as I am just wasting time.
Are you ready for the secret yet?
Here it is in 1 single word.
Heaps of people are doing themselves in by thinking the detector they have is NOT good enough OR the ground they are working is too flogged OR they haven’t got the right coil OR digging tool OR Pin Pointer OR Finds bag or whatever other thing they saw on social media beside a big pile of pre-dec coins.
They are blaming the detector a lot of the time and it’s not the machine, ITS YOU!
I call this syndrome “Detector envy”, Its a clinical name I have developed over many many years researching psychology and the human condition. Well really I just made it up, but it is a thing and it cost people finds!
Over the series of a few emails or calls, you hear it in people’s voices, you see it when they post less and less on social media and many even drop out of the hobby as they think the gear they have is just not up to par and why bother.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Fact is that 90% of what people are finding could be found with the cheapest detector on the market. Excluding dodgy chinese Fakes. STAY AWAY FROM THE FAKES! Some are brilliant but 95% are complete duds and your just donating money.
You don’t need a Deus or a CTX 3030 to get out there and get your share, you just need to be confident in yourself and more importantly, confident you know how to use your gear.
Practice in the yard as it’s a fair possibility that a $2 coin in your yard will make the detector react in the same way in the field. Once you know what your machine does when you waive it above a $2 coin, then finding them in the park is easy.
Put one in the ground at home and get used to swinging over it, if that’s your target of choice then have a quick swing over the test $2 BEFORE you go for each hunt. Remind your brain that this is what we are after and your brain will respond.
It’s like a golfer and the perfect swing, they swing a million times to get into their memory and let the brain take over. The don’t think about it, it just comes natural.
If you hear that $2 enough times it becomes natural to stop and pick them up, its instinct.
As your skills grow use more test targets and over time you’ll just know when to stop and dig a hole, and when it’s probably best to just keep walking.
I find that if I am in this situation I tend to just pack up for the day or morning or whatever and have a break. Sometimes even Just 10 minutes sitting in the bush or on the nearest bench, looking around gets your blood flowing again and the keenness comes back.
I have seen people with Under $300 detectors put people with 3K machines to shame, purely because they are keen, Know the machine they are using and are in the right headspace.
I have been Out Hunted by People with machines that cost 1 tenth of what I was swinging because my phone kept ringing or I was thinking about the store or something going on at home at the time.
Get your head in the game, BE CONFIDENT, practice at home with test targets, get to know your gear inside and out and become CONFIDENT if your not now. also realise that some days it’s just not gonna happen. This doesn’t mean tomorrow will be the same so get back on the horse when it kicks you in the dirt.
Get back out in the yard and practice some more, it will come to you.
If your mind is in the game and your confident in your gear and your skills then you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can fill a jar and make the detector you really really want (NOT NEED) your own.
Or you could use the extra finds money to take the other half out for dinner……. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I ordered the new machine too. 🙂
P.S I write this because in the last 4 months I have done very little detecting and the detecting I have done has been half hearted at best. I haven’t really found anything and found myself second guessing what would normally be second nature.
I’ve been in the test patch at home again and getting to know my Deus all over again, It comes back fast and I noticed this morning I was focused, happy and finding a fair few coins in my favorite “let’s have a quick Hunt” park. The same park I found 2 coins in 4 days ago.
It really got me thinking “it is all your head man”…… and I believe it to be true.
