Finding a piece of gold, is there a better feeling for a detectorist?
Whether it’s a natural Nugget or a piece that has been shaped by a jeweler it is by far the most prized find and also one of the most elusive.
BUT Many people will never experience the thrill of finding gold in the bush, on the beach or in a park.
Because they let people tell them it’s impossible with the equipment they have.
FACT: If you own a metal detector of any description and its switched on and Pointed at the ground you’re in with a chance of finding gold in some form.
Now people will lead you to believe that The AUSTRALIAN soil has some weird characteristic that won’t allow that happen and that, to be 100% Honest is a complete Load of Bullshit!
YES There are some places some machines will do it very tough, but the simple fix for that is to just not go there.
Even when the soils harsh Metal detectors will still detect metal.
So for those that reckon a lot of machines won’t find gold in Australian conditions, you should:
- Tell that to the Guy that found a 10oz piece with his 705 at Wedderburn under a fence.
- Tell that to the guy that found 100grammer on a footpath in Ballarat also with a 705.
- Tell that to the guy that is finding gold EVERYDAY with his ORX in Qld.
- Tell that to the Victorian Guy that is Finding gold EVERY TRIP with his GM 1000.
- Tell that to the guy that found the 140 odd grammer at Wedderburn with his CTX 3030. (I got to hold that piece and it assayed at 97%)
- Tell that to the 2 Guys using Equinox 800’s to find gold on a regular basis.
- Tell that the little kid that found a 1.3 grammer with his garrett ace 200i at Warwick the other week at an Event.
- And I could tell you a hundred more stories like this.
- Ok 1 more… The guy, with only 1 Leg, that got a piece off the road with an XP Deus HF Round coil while I was standing there!

FACT: You don’t need to spend 3.5K on a Pulse Induction gold machine to find gold.
FACT: NO Machine has ever found any gold while sitting in the shed, car or office, switched off or with a flat battery.
SO The secret to finding gold in The Australian Gold fields is to go out and give it a crack. Spend sometime researching some area’s, spend some time getting to know HOW your machine works.
BUT Most Importantly, spend as much time as you possibly can with your detector, in area’s that may contain gold, swinging the thing from side to side.
IF Your a VLF user, then LOSE the obsession with silence right now, it ain’t gonna happen! Learn to put up with the noise BUT learn what those noises are.
I can almost guarantee you 100% that if you have spent more than 20 hours looking for gold in the right location then you have probably walked right over the top of it.
You need to investigate every signal and this goes for PI and VLF, you need to be thinking “WHY did that just change” and then investigate further until you have the answer.
Once your lucky enough to find a piece of gold, get to know it! Throw it back in the hole and LISTEN to it from many different angles. Notice HOW it made your machine change and what it sounded like.
Now the biggest question from VLF users is what TID number is gold going to come up at.
The answer to that is a POSITIVE one, Most of the time…….
Gold makes NO sense in ring form, necklace form or Natural Nugget. It rings up all over the shop and generally small Nuggets and 9k will be quite low, where big chunky nuggets and larger pieces of 18K+ seem to ring up a bit Higher. NOT Pre45 florin high but up there. I’ve tagged gold I would have called post45 thrip or sixpence (or squashed aluminium bottle cap LOL) of i’d been in a park.
Those that are finding gold with $1,000ish machines are working the ground hard. Now I don’t mean they are doing it hard, I mean they are just taking the time to do it SMARTER.
They are prepping the area, moving obstacles and investigating EVERY sound the machine makes. The advantage of VLF is your not going to dig a LOT of big holes, so most investigations take under a minute to get your conclusion.
Right now there are people sitting home that own GM 1000’s, ORX, Xterra, Equinox, CTX, XP Deus, AT Range and many more machines, thinking they don’t have a chance at finding gold.
And they are right, because of the simple fact they are sitting home.
Get off the couch, turn off Facebook, leave the phone in the car and hit the Australian goldfields with whatever you’ve got to throw at them.
Because being out there Increases your chances of finding gold exponentially and decreases the chances of being talked out of it by keyboard warriors with a great knowledge of YouTube.
Charge it up or Get some new batteries and get out there people. As I said the Secret to Finding more Gold in the Australian Gold fields is to be actually looking for it!
Happy Hunting.

P.S Getting a bit bored with the Armchair Experts that say your wasting your time with anything other than a high end PI machine. Just because they failed doesn’t mean you will too. Persistance, Patience and Knowledge is required and that is all gained IN THE FIELD.
The gold is still out there, you just need to put in the effort and go get it. Those that are making the effort are reaping the rewards.
